Two years later... Linux is still not a gaming OS, even though the guys at Valve tried to help. It's open source, funding is little to none. Half of the generic peripherals and not only have a hard time working under CentOS and Debian and I steer clear of all those kitsch distros that try to look like Windows and OS X. Even if manufacturers are required by some international law to sell their hardware with fully operational linux drivers, they'd still have to make a dozen of them just to suit the requirements of the major Linux distros. And I'm not sure they'll be up to the task, given the percentage of Linux users worldwide.

You are not specifying what Acer did you get her? A $250 one or a $2500 one? Also, the article does say that Apple's macbooks are (were?) better than non-apple laptops, although I'm very happy with my Asus ROG 32 GB ram, an i7 and gtx 980M 4GB. An actual mobile desktop PC!

In reply to <a href="https://rocketjump.com/blog/why-were-switching-from-macs#comment-72781">jared</a>.

Anyone I've ever seen on a tricycle was having waaaaay more fun than anyone I've ever seen on a tricked out motorbike.

Ahhh... the freedom of youth and discovery vs the aging desire to hopelessly rekindle that lost sense of experience.

That said I'm currently defecting from the mac camp after 20 years with their products. Not hatin' anyone. My personal opinion... Mac OS is something I'm most familiar with and I believe offers a superior user interface from a point of ease and reliability. I'm reasonably experienced with PCs but am confident I'll be up to speed quickly enough. Yep... truth is I'm shifting because of hardware possibilities that weren't available on my tricycle.

My opinion... if you have no clue, have never used a computer of any kind and/or just woke up from a 20 year coma... buy a mac. If you are a trick it out kinda guy... go PC... if you are a "download illegal software and movies" kinda person go mac to avoid the virus potential.

Cost is not the argument it was 10 years ago. Nor are software options.
That's why this thread died a year ago.

In reply to <a href="https://rocketjump.com/blog/why-were-switching-from-macs#comment-73690">TotallydubbedHD</a>.

I got my wife an ACER windows 7 laptop for school a few years ago... It was nothing but a bloated nightmare of headaches to maintain. It was also heavy and ugly. I just got her a MacBook Air and she can fit it in her purse and I never have to help her do anything on it. Makes my life easier.

I'd imagine Apple computers are lazy IT guys best friends.

In reply to <a href="https://rocketjump.com/blog/why-were-switching-from-macs#comment-104964">different</a>.

It's odd what you are bringing up for hardware experience. The hardware is the same except that Macs usually use different firmware for compatibility reasons. I do know that PC power supplies that come with computer cases are garbage, and I have found many issues like BSODs caused by glitchy CHEAP power supplies that have intermittent voltage drops or spikes. After 1 year with an included power supply with a computer case I purchased, I installed a monitoring program and found that the BSODs and other unusual behavior always coincided with voltage fluctuations. After replacing the power supply with a quality unit it worked flawlessly for over 10 years before I retired it. Since then I have tossed the included power supplies or purchased bare computer cases and installed quality power supplies with no issues. Remember, you are saving a thousand or more dollars...pay the extra $20-$50 for a higher wattage, brand name quality supply and most or all of your issues will be gone. I also don't get your laptop issues. I have a 7 year old HP that runs flawlessly and spends most of it's life capturing and digitizing HD video for hours on end every day with the processor running at 80% with absolutely no issues. A friend of mine has a 10 year old Dell and it's running perfect to this day. Yet I've seen people with Mac laptops have constant issues with batteries overheating and taking out the keyboard, displays "fritzing out", and motherboard replacements dictated by Apple geniuses. And the usual line from the Apple geniuses: "You know for a few hundred bucks more than the repair you can get the latest Macbook. We can't guarantee that something else won't need a repair on yours after we repair it."
